Love actually

Directed by Richard Curtis in 2003, this film has over the years become a classic in the romantic comedy and Christmas film category. Through ten very distinct stories, love is filmed in all its forms in this film with a five-star cast (Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley?).

The express pole

In this animated film, a young boy doubting the existence of Santa Claus boards a train, the Pole Express, heading for the North Pole. There he will meet other young people with whom he will realize the extent of his gifts, as the train sinks into enchanted lands.

The holiday

This romantic comedy has also become a classic of Christmas movies and is also composed of a very beautiful cast (Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black). Here, Amanda, an American, and Iris, an English, decide to exchange their house, without knowing each other, after their love disappointment. Iris will disembark in Los Angeles in a luxurious villa and Amanda in a typical English cottage. The two young women spend a peaceful vacation before they are shaken by the arrival of Iris’s brother in Amanda’s life and Miles in Iris’s life.

The ewe is born with an amazing physical peculiarity that pushes Maria to brood her like her own child, after having taken her away from her biological mother, who comes to bleat under her window in spite. Maria does not hesitate to take down her rival to raise the strange creature, who exorcises a repressed trauma and seals the happiness found with Ingvar. Riding on the idea of ??monstrous offspring (already explored this year in Annette, by Leos Carax), Lamb stands out as a cathartic and fantastic fable which, through metaphor, has the courage to tackle the subject of the death of a child while focusing on the economy of dialogue and the tension ambient. The King’s Man ? Première mission **

During the First World War, the very mysterious character of Orlando, Duke of Oxford, British aristocrat and convinced pacifist, has the bad surprise to hear his son announce to him his decision to join the army to go to the front. . In the manner of Quentin Tarantino time Inglourious Basterds (2009), Matthew Vaughn has fun rewriting history in this uchronia which adopts the delusional humor dear to Kingsman, by mixing conspiracy theory, cartoon villains and joke ingredients. The offbeat atmosphere (specific to the original comic strip by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons), however, breaks the tone to evoke the tragedy of colonization and the conflict that bloodied Europe in 1914-1918. A teenager on his own is hired by a criminal to find buried treasure near a school. Contrary to the naturalistic drama, Majid Majidi signs a real adventure film, strewn with adventures and skillfully produced, to denounce the exploitation of children. Certainly, by making education the real treasure, he pushes an open door, but he manages to find the right balance between efficiency and realism, surrounded by convincing young amateur actors, some of whom are real street kids. A Perfect Enemy **

A famous architect is arrested in a Parisian airport by a mysterious young woman who manages to make him miss his plane. Adaptation of Enemy cosmetics, by Amélie Nothomb, this theatrical story orchestrates a cathartic confrontation in the mind of The Maiden and Death (1994), by Roman Polanski, to evoke responsibility and guilt. A mental and paranoid thriller, a little demonstrative but resolutely Machiavellian. S.B.

In Berlin, while leaving to audition for a blockbuster Marvel, Daniel, an actor of international renown, crosses paths with his neighbor in a café who has some revelations for him? Very amusing, this first feature film directed by the German actor Daniel Brühl, who sketches a rather jubilant game of mirrors in a somewhat static chronicle between autobiography and fiction, where he approaches with self-mockery the question of gentrification, fame, harassment … while also summoning the specter of the former -RDA and the Stasi. In Rome, three men and a woman, over the years, love each other, separate and reunite. With this comedy spanning forty years, Gabriele Muccino explicitly refers to We loved each other so much. Impossible to compare with Ettore Scola’s masterpiece, a chasm separating the two films: Muccino, with a less political approach, hovers more than he portrays the evolution of Italian society and, despite his undeniable know-how, it has the finesse of a 15-ton. His account of the passage of time, carried by good actors, is nonetheless sympathetic. BAP.T.

Deception *

D’Arnaud Desplechin, with Léa Seydoux, Denis Podalydès. 1h45.

A famous American writer, Philip moved to London with his wife. This does not prevent him from having an affair with a younger woman, also married. For this adaptation of the eponymous and autobiographical book by Philip Roth, Arnaud Desplechin orchestrates a very theatrical confrontation and, despite a discourse revolving around the feeling of love, strangely disembodied. We never manage to get attached to these two characters centered on their neuroses. It seems long, very long … B.T.

The vision that Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud has of the family is agreed, even a bit dusty, the character of an outdated mother that he offers to Alexandra Lamy, unflattering. If its performers are not unworthy, the film never seeks to go beyond its status as a calibrated comedy alternating between humor and emotion. BAP.T.

What was the best series offered this year on the Apple TV + platform? The best movie ? Discover the 10 programs best rated by AlloCiné viewers in 2021!

This is a totally unexpected ranking of the best series of 2021 on AppleTV + that is offered to us at the end of the year. First surprise – and of size – with the presence of Foundation (adapted from the novel Foundation Isaac Asimov) in fourth position only. The science fiction series – presented as the platform’s blockbuster – therefore does not integrate the podium, dominated by The Mosquito Coast, a new adaptation of Paul Theroux’s novel (after the 1986 film directed by Peter Weir).

Less publicized series, such as Physical with Rose Byrne and Acapulco respectively occupy second and third place in this ranking. And we note in fifth position the presence of the Israeli drama Losing Alice, an exciting psychological thriller carried by Ayelet Zurer.

On the cinema side, the documentary The World’s A Little Blurry devoted to singer Billie Eilish sits in first place in the cinema rankings, followed by the films Palmer (a drama which offers Justin Timberlake one of his best roles) and Cherry, which marks Tom Holland’s reunion with directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame).

Here is a question that deserves to be asked! DC movies, The Flash, expected at the cinema in 2022, and Batgirl for HBO Max, will they be read to each other? It seems that yes the sight of the last casting announcements of the 2 feature films of superheroes.

The question arises indeed when we know very well, the film of Andy Muschietti with Ezra Miller will visit the multiverse of DC (via the Flashpoint comics) with the presence of Michael Keaton’s Batman. Now we learn that the latter will also be in the Batgirl by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for WarnerMedia streamer. Although the details of Keaton’s role in Batgirl are unknown, we can not imagine seeing the actor in a costume other than that of the Dark Knight. Nonetheless, in a press release from Warner Bros. it says that “credits are not final and dates are subject to change”, so Keaton’s role is not necessarily set in stone.

In addition, it is also announced that Michael Shannon, General Zod of Man of Steel by Zack Snyder, will be in The Flash. Here again, we do not know for sure whether the actor of The Shape of Water and of Take Shelter will resume his role as Kryptonian general, but one can inevitably think so when Antje Traue, who had been Faora-Ul, General Zod’s sidekick in Man of Steel, is also used in The Flash.

The Flash will therefore have a component of time travel in its history. Ultimately, The Flash himself is his own antagonist in this movie, as he has to face some of his own mistakes that come back to haunt him. According to the plot summary published by Warner Bros. Miller’s Barry Allen “pushes the limits of his superpowers” in his first solo film, and according to the teaser we saw earlier this year at the DC FanDome , he doesn’t just run into other versions of the superheroes of the DCEU, but also other versions of himself.

The plot of Batgirl, meanwhile, remains a mystery but seems to focus on the more down to earth threats plaguing the Gotham Police Department, with a certain Brendan Fraser who will play the wicked Firefly, and Jacob Scipio, who was chosen for a role not yet disclosed. We also know that another character from Snyder’s DC universe will be part of it, and for a consistent role, it’s that of JK Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon (Justice League).

Keaton won’t be the only Bruce Wayne / Batman in, however. The Flash, but the only one for the moment announced on Batgirl. Ben Affleck will also be reprising his role as Batman for the film centered around DC’s Carmelite Speedster. Sasha Calle, Kiersey Clemons, Maribel Verd and Ron Livingston will also be in the game. The Flash is due out in November 2022 in theaters around the world. As for the HBO Max movie dedicated to Barbara Gordon (Leslie Grace), currently filming in Pod, it is expected for the end of 2022 for the moment, but it seems likely that the release could be postponed to 2023.

Filmmaker, climber and journalist Caroline Treadway follows the journey of two best friends who dare to break the silence on one of sport’s darkest secrets. A very personal investigation fueled by the testimonies of great champions such as Emilie Harrington, Angie Payne, Andrea Szekely or even Kai Lightner.

This is the question that the engineer Corentin de Chatelperron tried to answer by embarking alone for 120 days aboard a floating platform anchored off the coast of Thailand in 2018. The answer: 30 low-technologies allowing him to answer to his basic needs. An experience to discover in his latest film, a 52-minute documentary broadcast on arte.tv from October 21 to December 26.

It is in WoGü, 350 meters of climbing – a multi-pitch route with sustained ratings (8c max), climbed until then by three climbers – Adam Ondra, Edu Marin and Roland Hemetzberger – that the Lachat / Caprez duo tackled . An adventure from which they took a 40-minute documentary full of humor, to discover in full at the end of the article.

9 ? Outdeh

On May 11, 1981, Bob Marley, world icon of reggae, died. 40 years later, his influence is more present than ever. Witness the documentary “Outdeh”. First film by the German director, it immerses us in the daily life of Jamaican youth, between surfing, skateboarding, reggae and rap. A new generation in transition, determined to break out of the old structures of society and contribute to a new vision of the island. Best Surf Feature Film Award at the 2020 Paris Surf and Skate Film Festival, Best Feature Film Award at the Berlin Independent Film Festival, Oscar nominated in the documentary category, this 77-minute film also won gold at the Byron Bay International Film Festival as well as the prize for the best musical documentary, it is to say if it is unanimous.

10 – The shadow wall

Grand Prize of the 2021 La Rochelle Adventure Film Festival, the work of the Polish Eliza Kubarska traces the epic of a family of Sherpas led to brave the gods to earn the money necessary for the education of their son unique. Vanishing Lines, through this local example, is also a warning message for the many other high mountain development projects around the world: it is imperative to protect these natural spaces before it is too late.

The temptation of evil [1]

It’s Christmas Eve. Gauvain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s nephew, wakes up half-drunk in a castle brothel, his mouth still greasy with wine, his body numb with nocturnal antics. Invited, along with the Knights of the Round Table, to the festivities of the birth of Christ, Gauvain takes his place alongside his tired uncle when a massive and threatening warrior – a mixture of man and Ent escaped from Middle-earth – appears and challenges the assembly. Virgin of all glory, the young Gauvain raises the bravado? Thus begins a mystical quest which will lead the novice knight to the northern borders of the kingdom, in search of a mysterious green chapel, the site of a final confrontation. But he will have to go through seven trials to test his courage and virtue, moving further and further away from the world of men as he nears his goal.

For months now, David Lowery’s new film has been making cinephiles tremble with impatience who – the fault of an excessively greedy studio – will most certainly have to sit on a French theatrical release. This in no way detracts from the astonishment of the proposed experience. The Green Knight is at the crossroads of heroic-fantasy and introspective tale, by reinterpreting a classic of medieval literature. The film is indeed adapted from the novel of chivalry Sire Gauvain and the Green Knight dating from the end of the 14th century. We note first of all that the character of Gauvain contrasts with the paragon of virtue commonly described in Arthurian legend. The courteous, brave and measured knight becomes on screen a pretentious and boastful debauchery. It is only at the end of his initiatory journey, after having faced brigands, ghosts and other supernatural manifestations, that he will abandon his vanity to accept his fate with honor and dignity. His bitterest fight being the one he delivers to his tortured soul.

From a formal point of view David Lowery articulates quite brilliantly the establishment of a Gothic atmosphere whose evil seems to permeate both the fortified castle and the surrounding nature, like the Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola (1992); that the insistence on the painful expressiveness of the faces often filmed in close-ups, like The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer (1927). Less versed in arty and fake aporias than A Ghost Story (2017), the director favors an adventure with a contemplative rhythm, with slow and sought-after plans, enriched by fantastic and memorable visions (a march of giants in the mist, a ghost in search of his head, a hallucination of a bloody future …) sharp with the realism of Last Duel by Ridley Scott (2021), the heartbreaking irony of Kaamelott by Alexandre Astier or the distressing buffoonery of King arthur by Guy Ritchie (2017). The superb photograph of Andrew Droz Palermo, all in disturbing frosts, rotting nature and dreamlike atmosphere reinforcing the disturbing mystery of a serious and poetic work, marked with the seal of black magic.

Splendor and misery of an upstart [2]

While the Restoration tried to make people forget the republican parenthesis, at the beginning of the 1820s, Lucien de Rubempré (Benjamin Voisin) – Chardon of his real name -, a little orphan poet from Angoulême, dreamed of literary glory. In order to make his dream come true, he decides to “go up to the capital” with Madame de Bargeton (Cécile de France), a small local nobleman of whom he is the lover. Very quickly, the young poet embarrasses his mistress, who decides to leave him. But whatever, because at the time, “If you had to miss your life, it was better to miss it in Paris”. Despite his heartache, Lucien is optimistic: “If the present is cold, naked, petty, the future is blue, rich and splendid”, he writes to his big sister, who sends him money from Angoulême. His Parisian life really changes when he meets Etienne Lousteau (Vincent Lacoste), a young liberal and cynical journalist, who also dreams of literary glory, but who is above all ready to sell his pen to the highest bidder. Initiated to literary and dramatic criticism, Lucien flourished in a world where ?Everything can be bought and sold, literature like the press, politics like feelings, reputations like souls?. At the same time, he falls head over heels in love with Coralie (Salomé Dewaels), an actress maintained by a Parisian bourgeois, who will do anything to make his dreams of greatness come true? until the couple is lost.

Adaptations of novels are rarely a real success, all the more so when it comes to one of the greatest monuments of French literature. Successful bet for Xavier Giannoli, who is directing a magnificent film. From the acting, to the voice-over, through the sets, the dialogues or the soundtrack (which celebrates classical music from Vivaldi to Schubert), Lost illusions almost flawlessly achieves. We can nevertheless deplore the absence of the Cenacle, a nice group of intellectuals frequented by Lucien, and some small anachronisms. Balzacian social criticism, like hypocrisy and the reign of money in barely industrialized society, is perfectly staged. At the end of the 149 minutes, we understand what Marx meant, when he said that « Balzac [avait] writing The capital before [lui] ».

Don Quixote of the Pacific [3]

30 years, alone in the jungle, waging a war without enemies, this is the fate of the “remaining Japanese soldiers”, the best known of which was Second Lieutenant Hiro Onoda. After the defeat of Japan in the Battle of the Pacific and the surrender of Emperor Hirohito, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 14, 1945, there were a few hundred who continued to fight, refusing to believe in defeat, in a war that now only existed in their heads. A chivalrous idea of ??honor, or the capacity of the mind to transform reality, to convince itself that there is a threat and a ruse despite common sense? By adapting the story of this soldier to the cinema, it is this theme, that of Don Quixote and his sublime madness, that the director Arthur Harari has seized for his second feature film released on the screens at during the summer of 2021. And what a success!

The fact of having succeeded in making such an ambitious film, shot in Cambodia, with Japanese actors, in Japanese, by a French director, is already in itself a feat, but it would not do justice to this Onoda than to reduce it to technical considerations. Onoda, 10,000 nights in the jungle is a masterpiece both in dramaturgy, in its approach to the psychology of the main character, and visual. In an interview with afcinema.com, Tom Harari, the director of photography and brother of the director, explained that the composition of the shots was inspired by film classics like the films of Samuel Fuller and that the team had wanted to avoid the cliché visual of the tropical atmosphere, with yellows and greens tending towards gold. Instead, therefore, a ?blue / magenta? tint for a bewitching film like the sound of a monsoon rain on a makeshift shelter, from which one emerges breathlessly after being held in suspense for more than 2:45. And if, with the health context, the film did not get all the publicity it deserved, it will undoubtedly become a cult film, that any good cinephile can store without hesitation next to The Red line by Terrence Malick, on the shelf reserved for films that leave an indelible mark on their viewer.
