How would you spend a week if you knew it was the last?
The questions couldn’t be more personal.
Burkeman says we are closer to being in that position at all times than is comfortable to admit.
The first sentence of the book, repeated for emphasis on the last page, is: “The average length of human life is absurd, terrifying, and insultingly short“About 4,000 weeks, on average, hence the title.
For more than a decade, Burkeman, a British journalist based in New York, wrote a periodical series for The Guardian titled EThis column will change your life, in which he explored “routes to mental well-being”, both seriously and skeptically.
A previous book of his was titled “The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking.”
Burkeman’s work could be conveniently placed on a shelf alongside the books published by the School of Life in Alain de Botton, tips with literary flavor on love, friendship, work and other enigmas.
Burkeman quotes everyone from Nietzsche and Seneca to Rod Stewart Y Danielle Steel, to make your case.
The main one is stop trying so hard.
“No one in human history has achieved ‘work-life balance,’ whatever that is,” he writes, “and you certainly won’t get there by copying the ‘six things successful people do before 7 in the morning'”.
Also, doing more is just a way of inviting … to do more.
“Every time you reply to an email, there is a good chance of provoking a reply to that email, which in turn may require another reply, and so on, until the death by heat of the universe “.
Rather than lists of things to do before you’re fully awake or paths to get to inbox zero, Burkeman offers a few history lessons, a bit of Buddhist philosophy here and there, and a few real tips.
“The true measure of any time management technique is whether or not it helps you neglect the right things.”
At the beginning of the book, we go back to the time of medieval farmers, who, Burkeman says, did not even think or experience time as “an abstract entity – as a thing.”
Nature and need provided a rhythm for days and tasks, and they just followed that rhythm.
But then, at some point (capitalism hashtag?), “Time became a thing used“, a resource that you could feel bad about because of its mishandling.
Burkeman wants “inciting us to question the very idea that time is something you use in the first place. “
He likes italics.
One way to do this is to exercise Buddhist-type detachment and acceptance.
“The world is already broken”Burkeman writes, and so is the possibility of you taking advantage of your time.
In the face of the tyranny of choice, you can find the freedom (and presumably stress relief) in understanding that “you are guaranteed to miss almost every experience the world has to offer.”
He lost me a bit when he wrote that time is a “network good“something that is best optimized between groups of people to” socialize, go out on dates, raise children, launch businesses, build political movements, make technological advancements “- but that’s only because, other than socializing, I really don’t want to do none of those things.
No contemporary time management guide can ignore the need to ignore our phones, and Burkeman pauses to acknowledge the plague of care.
After describing your use of Twitter, says that “he is now in recovery.” Besides Twitter, I have spent a not inconsiderable part of the prime of my life playing various anagram games on my phone. And you?
In the end, some of Burkeman’s advice (“focus on one big project at a time”, “keep a to-do list”) seem like disappointingly traditional, considering how well he is at marking the kitsch of your gender.
As another example, on one page he is shown scathing with the command of mindfulness of “being here now”.
“It’s like trying too hard to fall asleep and therefore failing.”
Then, near the end of the book, he advises us to “pay more attention to each moment, however mundane“.
But part of the pleasure of reading Burkeman is that you assume that he would gladly point out these same setbacks and contradictions.
His tone is neither confident nor hurtful; is in the same boat bored where we are, just trying to stop things where he can.
Despite my airport habits, there are things I want to achieve in this life.
And some of Burkeman’s modest suggestions on how to prioritize things, without simply adding stress about prioritizing things in life, seem to be worth trying.
And in addition to the help you can offer, “Four thousand weeks“It is also good company; it tackles important, even existential issues, with a sense of humor and a balanced perspective.
It seemed to me that reading it – Burkeman might reject this particular way of describing it – was a good use of my time.

?The Atlas Underground Fire? is the title of the album in which the guitarist has had different collaborations from bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Phantogram or artists like those already mentioned, Chris Stapleton, Mike Posner O Dennis Lyxzén of Refused, with which he has recorded a dozen versions that Morello has shaped during this time of pandemic, as he himself has commented: ?During the confinement I did not have access to a sound engineer, so I had to record all the parts of the guitar into voice notes from my phone. It seemed like an unacceptable idea, but it led to a freedom in creativity where I couldn’t think too much about any of the guitar parts and just had to trust my instincts. ?The Atlas Underground Fire? is the title of the album in which the guitarist has had different collaborations from bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Phantogram or artists like those already mentioned, Chris Stapleton, Mike Posner O Dennis Lyxzén of Refused, with which he has recorded a dozen versions that Morello has shaped during this time of pandemic, as he himself has commented: ?During the confinement I did not have access to a sound engineer, so I had to record all the parts of the guitar into voice notes from my phone. It seemed like an unacceptable idea, but it led to a freedom in creativity where I couldn’t think too much about any of the guitar parts and just had to trust my instincts. This album was a lifesaver in a difficult time that allowed me to find new ways to create new global artistic connections that helped transform a moment of fear and anxiety into one of musical expression and rock improvisations ?.
In the guitarist’s words about the AC / DC version: ?Our version of? Highway To Hell ?is a tribute to AC / DC, but with Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder taking this legendary song into the future. The Australian composer is precisely one of those artists capable of find inspiration in the hardest moments. Out of the rubble of a tortuous experiential time, this theme was born which, in itself, unfolds as a joint reflection on Nick’s own detox, his ill-fated romances, and his non-religious outlook of one’s own life.
A change of theme in romance
Like any artist hungry to experience new horizons, Nick Cave junto a The Bad Seeds he took on the task of giving a new air to his work.
